Backtested against historical technology shifts

Technology Improvement Rates (TIRs) are best understood like compounding interest rates. A higher TIR doesn’t necessarily mean the technology is best today. It means it’s expected to make bigger year-over-year gains in performance and/or cost over competing technologies.

We saw the EV signal in 2003. Twenty years before the market did.

  • The patent improvement signal for lithium-ion batteries was already pulling away from internal combustion in the early 2000s. The model could have called BEVs as the dominant chemistry years before automakers committed billions to hydrogen fuel cells.

    An automotive OEM running this radar at the time would have been ahead of Tesla and BYD by a decade.

Online payments versus cash

  • The patent signal for digital payments showed strong improvement as early as 1996.
  • PayPal launched in 1998, and the category pulled far ahead of cash transactions as the infrastructure improvement compounded. The TIR had called it years before the market caught on.

SSD versus HDD

  • The model detected the rise of SSDs in the early 2000s.
  • By 2019, SSDs accounted for nearly 75% of notebook shipments. The shift was in the patent data long before it became obvious in the market.
